Treating Hair Loss with Finasteride May Be Effective but Also Dangerous

While minoxidil is hailed as a relatively safe hair loss treatment, treating hair loss with finasteride may be effective but also dangerous. Yet to many who are losing hair and have had no appreciable results with a minoxidil containing hair system, such as Rogaine, it appears to be a risk worth taking.

Finasteride is the key ingredient in the drug Propecia, a popular hair loss treatment. Other drugs which have this chemical as their main ingredient are Finax, Gefina, Prosteride, and Proscar which carries a very high dose of the chemical compound. To those in the know, Propecia is known as a treatment for men suffering from prostate cancer, and during medical trials it became apparent that the chemical finasteride was the reason for the much noted side effect of hair growth and re-growth.

Yet if you suffer from severe hair loss that makes it appear as though hair transplantation is on the horizon and not even minoxidil hair treatments have yielded any results, you may be vastly disappointed. Treating hair loss with finasteride may be effective but only for those with beginning to slightly advanced hair loss. Those whose hair loss is substantial or who are bald will not find it to be one of the useful hair loss treatments or even a medical hair restoration for them.

Consumers who have decided to begin treating hair loss with finasteride and have had success with this chemical compound have reported that the re-growth of the hair will begin at the crown of the head and will virtually halt a receding hairline. Thus it is surprising that some suffering from hair loss will refuse the prescription of Propecia!

Before you consider them oddballs that love the notion of having noxious powdered seaweed capsules for breakfast, lunch and dinner in an effort to botanically restore lost tresses, it is vital to understand that treating hair loss with finasteride may be effective but also dangerous – usually to the ladies in their lives. As a matter of fact, severe birth defects have been noted as a potential side effect not only if a pregnant woman ingests the drug, but even if she handles a pill! Absorption of even minute traces through the skin is highly dangerous and the unborn child is almost always affected.

Of course, some men have also read up on the potential side effects of the drug and decided that dealing with hair loss shampoo, the occasional odd hair loss solution, and even a more experimental treatment for hair loss may be more desirable than some of the side effects they could be facing! Did you know that the growth of male breasts has been associated with the ingestion of finasteride by men? Erectile dysfunction – impotence – is another biggie that has many a man beg off and while the male breasts may reduce in size upon a cessation of the Propecia treatment, the impotence may be a life long side effect.

Think long and hard before treating hair loss with finasteride containing substances! The side effects may be far worse than the hair loss.
