The Wild and Wooly World of Hair Treatments

Hair treatments are a long established staple of the personal care aisle in even the supermarkets. They are also the subject of many a spam email, late night infomercial, and a plethora of websites that offer herbal, chemical, natural, not so natural and even spiritual methods for putting hair back on bold heads. In the wild and wooly world of hair treatments, there is a hair loss product for kinky hair, straight hair, and even dog hair!

Digging deeper, many a hair loss sufferer understands that the loss of hair is directly related to a physical condition or a response to a medical treatment, yet unfortunately the choice of hair treatments does not always reflect this kind of understanding. As a matter of fact, it is interesting to note that instead of consulting a physician about the loss of the prized tresses, the individual sufferer will take her or his cues from the late night salesman who comes into the living room via the infomercial.

Hair treatments come in a number of sizes and shapes:

  1. There are the specialty shampoos and conditioners – and sometimes combinations of the two - that are used once a day.
  2. Salves and heating caps provide alleged localized follicle rejuvenation.
  3. Hair treatments may also involve dietary supplements and yoga exercises!
  4. Tinctures, scalp massages, and time specific ingestion of herbal supplements is not unheard of.

Even as the world of natural loss remedy options is growing almost daily, the understanding what may cause hair loss also grows on a daily basis. Consider for example the understanding that birth control is a culprit in the loss of hair, and by and large it is the hormonal punch packed by a number of birth control pills that are indicted in the thinning of hair. The good news is that this kind of hair loss needs but one of the simplest hair treatments: choose a different method of birth control and permit some time for the hair to re-grow!

More ominous of course are the hair treatments sought as a result of serious medical conditions: there is the hair loss associated with lupus which may not be completely reversed even after treatment is received, but which may be halted with the usage of minoxidil in an effort to maintain follicular health and overall hair growth. In the same vein, the documented cases in which a malfunctioning thyroid gland has led to a lack of proper hormones required for the proper growth and maintenance of follicle health and hair growth, the treatment of the condition by and large has been sufficient in stopping the loss of hair and even without hair treatments there have been copious reports of re-growth. It is highly recommended to have a complete physical workup done prior to engaging in any kind of hair treatments currently available on the market; the goal is to ensure that there are no medical conditions which go unchecked while you attempt to self-medicate and treat the symptom rather than the cause.
